February 2025 Regional Market Report News

Crop Updates

Balsamic Vinegar

Balsamic vinegar production is beginning to show signs of recovery as weather conditions across Europe stabilize. Production volumes have experienced a modest increase compared to last year; however, they remain significantly below the five-year average recorded between 2019 and 2023. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and assess any potential long-term impacts on supply and pricing.

Coconuts

Prolonged dry weather conditions, combined with the impact of multiple typhoons, have significantly affected coconut crop yields in key growing regions such as South Asia and South America in the second half of 2024. These challenging weather patterns have led to below-average production levels, raising concerns about supply availability and potential price fluctuations in the market. As we approach the high season for coconut harvest in April and May, we will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and their potential impact on crop yields.

Global Supply Chain and Logistics Updates

Navigating Tariff Impacts

On February 1, President Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada: 10% on goods from China and 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada, with certain exclusions. While the tariffs on products from China were implemented February 4, 2025, the tariffs applied to products from Canada and Mexico have been postponed by one month and are set to be implemented in March. We have been preparing for these tariffs since before the presidential election and are working diligently to mitigate their impact and maintain stability for our customers. As part of our preparations, we have been exploring alternate sourcing options for our imports from China, Mexico, and Canada, with the goal of mitigating, at least in part, the impact to our customers. We are working closely with our supply chain and regulatory partners to gather reliable information as quickly as it is available.

Optimism Surrounding the Suez Canal

Internationally, a ceasefire in the Gaza region has created the opportunity for the Suez Canal to resume normal operations. Approximately one year ago, major shipping lines suspended crossings through the canal due to targeted attacks by Houthi rebels. With the ceasefire now in place, the group has indicated a suspension of such actions. While shipping lines have not yet outlined concrete plans to resume operations, they have previously expressed intentions to return once the area is deemed secure. A fully operational Suez Canal is expected to provide relief by improving import efficiency, reducing ocean freight rates, and shortening transit times.

At Roland Foods, we remain cautiously optimistic about improvements in global supply chains throughout 2025. However, we will continue to closely monitor potential disruptions to ensure the seamless movement of goods.
